A Scrim is a curtain made from semi-transparent, gauzy material. When lit from the front, a Scrim looks completely solid. When lit from the back, it becomes practically invisible. Scrims are used quite often in the theatre as backdrops, to create depth onstage, to mask scene shifts, and even to evoke a sense of the past by giving a scene a soft, shadowy look.
